چکیده
Abstract We present a catalogue of 507 cataclysmic variables (CVs) observed in SDSS I to IV including 70 new classifications collated from multiple archival data sets. This represents the largest sample CVs with high-quality and homogeneous optical spectroscopy. have used this derive unbiased space densities period distributions for major sub-types CVs. also report on some peculiar CVs, bouncers exhibiting large changes accretion rates. 59 periods, 178 unpublished spectra 262 or updated classifications. From spectroscopy, we identified 18 systems incorrectly as literature. discuss properties 13 CVS, identify small set eight that defy standard classification scheme. use investigate distribution different CV sub-types, estimate their individual densities, well entire population. The includes 14 bounce candidates. variability across Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, highlighting selection biases variability-based detection. Finally, searched for, found tertiary companions anticipate extensive material included Supplementary Data will be useful range observational population studies

متن کاملVLT/FORS spectroscopy of faint cataclysmic variables discovered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
We present medium-resolution VLT/FORS2 spectroscopy of six cataclysmic variables discovered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We determine orbital periods for SDSS J023322.61+005059.5 (96.08 ± 0.09min), SDSS J091127.36+084140.7 (295.74 ± 0.22min), SDSS J103533.02+055158.3 (82.10 ± 0.09min), and SDSS J121607.03+052013.9 (most likely 98.82 ± 0.16min, but the one-day aliases at 92min and 107min are...
متن کاملThe Sloan Digital Sky Survey
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) will carry out a digital photometric and spectroscopic survey over π steradians in the northern Galactic cap. An array of CCD detectors used in drift-scan mode will image the sky in five passbands to a limiting magnitude of r′ ∼ 23. Selected from the imaging survey, 10 galaxies, 10 quasars and selected samples of stars will be observed spectroscopically. In a...
متن کاملThe Sloan Digital Sky Survey
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey is an ambitious, multi-institutional project to create a huge digital imaging and spectroscopic data bank of 25% of the celestial sphere, approximately 10,000 deg2 centred on the north galactic polar cap. The photometric atlas will be in 5 specially-chosen colours, covering the π ster of the Survey area to a limiting magnitude of r′∼23.1, on 0′′ . 4 pixels, resultin...
متن کاملThe fainter the better: cataclysmic variable stars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey has identified a total of 212 cataclysmic variables, most of which are fainter than 18th magnitude. This is the deepest and most populous homogeneous sample of cataclysmic variables to date, and we are undertaking a project to characterise this population. We have found that the SDSS sample is dominated by a great “silent majority” of old and faint CVs. We detect, f...
